Jasmine Warga is an author of children’s and Young Adult books. Her free verse book Other Words for Home earned her a Newbury Honor award in 2020.
Hayat spoke with Warga about her motivations, projects, and advice for aspiring writers.
Jasmine Warga pens award-winning books
Warga published her first book in 2015. My Heart and Other Black Holes followed the story of a Turkish-American teenager struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts.
“Aysel was a vessel for me to tackle questions about the demon of depression, grief, and the ultimate saving power of love and human connection,” Warga told Interview Magazine.
Warga followed this debut up with another young adult novel, Here We Are Now. Her 2019 free verse children’s book Other Words for Home earned a Newbury Honor and other awards.
“I don’t see a lot of Muslims or Arabic names in books, and I want to change that,” Warga told Hayat. The opportunity to meet and connect with young Muslim readers is the most rewarding part for Warga.
From science teacher to author
Warga was born in Cincinnati, and lives in Chicago with her family.
While teaching 6th grade science in Texas, the author decided to finally give writing a real go. “Lots of false starts and messy drafts later, here we are,” her website reads. “I feel extremely lucky as all I’ve ever wanted to do is tell stories.”
Jasmine Warga offers advice for aspiring writers
When asked what advice she has for aspiring writers, Warga answered simply: “Always read.”
“When you read, you become a better writer.” While taking writing classes can help, reading and of course writing are the most important factors. “Writing is like a muscle, and you have to use it constantly.”
