Egyptian-born, French-based artist Khaled Morad draws on his Egyptian-African heritage to guide his art. Many of these works are nominally portraits, yet shift the focus from the individual depicted.
“My work operates in a sensory manner, as well as an intellectual one,” writes Morad. “As an Egyptian I come from a multi-layered culture.”
Inspired by the inherent qualities of his materials, Islamic African art and literature, Morad’s art incorporates vibrant prints and colors, as well as a mix of traditional and modern themes.
Drawing inspiration from materials and media
In his biographical page, Morad describes his art as “a chemistry between cultural and religious influences, as the fusion of different artistic languages that enfold a global outlook to both art and life.”
He also focuses on the materials themselves. As a multi-media artist, he combines multiple mediums for his signature collage style. “The process heightens my awareness of weight, surface, texture, color permanence and opacity,” Morad says. He adds, “I think that the material is already the spirit [of the art].”
Cosmopolitan art reflects a cosmopolitan life
Morad was born in Egypt but currently resides in Paris. He has studied in the Parsons School of Design in New York and the Accademia Belle Arti in Rome. Morad has an upcoming exhibition which he calls “After the human recovery” which will be in Paris.
Morad also accepts commissions, and many of the works displayed on his site hang in various homes, brightening up rooms.
