Ladj Ly has been selected as one of Hayat’s Ramadan Top 30 Illuminators for his artistic and cultural contributions.

Raised in the gritty Paris suburb of Clinchy-Montfermeil, director Ladj Ly saw striking parallels between the class struggles fueling Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables, and those facing the largely immigrant population in his neighborhood today. His modern retelling of Les Misérables struck a chord with audiences and critics, earning Ly the Jury Prize at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. The Mali-native’s film was picked up by Amazon Studios and is available on Prime Video.
