As a writer on Shonda Rhimes’ Scandal, Raamla Mohamed learned the ropes for writing award-winning TV drama. After rising to become the show’s executive story editor, Mohamed has recently signed on to write for a new ABC drama titled Reasonable Doubt.
For this legal drama, Mohamed heads up the writing staff in her first studio deal. She also reunites with Scandal star Kerry Washington. Shawn Holley, member of O.J. Simpson’s legal team, has also joined the project as co-executive producer.
Raamla Mohamed Joins Reasonable Doubt
The new legal drama revolves around Charlie Stewart, “the most brilliant and fearless attorney in Los Angeles, who bucks the justice system at every chance she gets.” While little has been released about the show’s cast and plot, it will be produced by Kerry Washington’s Simpson Street Productions.
Larry Wilmore of Wilmore Films and ABC Studios says, “the chance to work with a rising star like Raamla, a shining star like Kerry, and a legend like Shawn Holley was simply irresistible! I am excited and honored.”
This is not Mohamed’s first rodeo when it comes to television writing and production. Other than a few off-Broadway shoes in New York, her professional repertoire includes working as a writers’ assistant on Grey’s Anatomy, a medical researcher on Off the Map, as well as a researcher and writer, and eventually executive story editor on Scandal. While prepping for Reasonable Doubt, Mohamed continues to co-write a pilot for HBO with Issa Rae.
Raamla Mohamed Finds Her Niche
Raamla Mohamed did not always align herself with the film industry. In fact, she came into Columbia as an undergraduate student studying economics. However, she ended up receiving a Bachelors degree in film and English in 2003, and went on to earn an MFA in writing for film and television at the University of Southern California in 2008.
Mohamed describes her initial experience working on Grey’s Anatomy as finding her place. The experience working on “one of her favorite shows” made her decide: “Whatever it takes, I will try to make this my career.”
Mohammed says that the best part of working on Scandal was the atmosphere among the writers. She tells The Root’s Akilah Green that “even when it’s stressful or we have to stay late to rebreak something, I’d say the best part is that you’re sitting in couches with people you like and have fun with and who respect your voice.”
